Today was Opening Day for the Red Sox.  And it sure did impress.
I was not able to update my accounts for a while because I have been on vacation as well as busy with school work.  Anyways, after showers poured down on Boston yesterday, Opening Day was rescheduled to 4:00 today.  It was a rematch of last year's ALCS, Red Sox against Rays.  Josh Beckett against James Shields.
The game started with a bang.  Dustin Pedroia went deep on the second pitch he saw of the season, instantly making it a 1-0 game.  Tampa quickly came back to tie it 1-1, but the Red Sox started breaking the game open in the bottom of the third, scoring three runs.  The game was never really close after that, as Varitek hit a long home run that barely went fair around Pesky Pole, making it a 5-1 game.  Despite a brief scare in the top of the eighth where the Rays jumped on the bullpen to score two more runs, the Red Sox held on.  Papelbon struck out the side in the ninth, and with another Papelbon fist pump, the game was over.  The Red Sox beat "The Mighty Rays" in convincing fashion, 5-3.
Even though Josh Beckett came through with a great performance, other top pitchers struggled in helping their teams.  Tim Lincecum, Brandon Webb, and Roy Halladay all struggled in their first starts, but no one was worse than CC Sabathia.  Sabathia allowed 6 runs in 4.1 innings, as the Yankees embarrassed themselves against the Orioles (The Orioles!).  Maybe my prediction will come true and we'll all see Sabathia on the DL and eating at Taco Bell in a few weeks.
That's all for today, and hopefully Jon Lester can replicate Beckett's strong performance against Scott Kazmir and the Rays tomorrow.

It was great that the Red Sox started the game at 4:06 in honor of Ted Williams.
